Chinese Community Helpers Program

In partnership with Canadian Mental Health Association, this project is a community peer support program to reduce social isolation and increase social inclusion among Chinese Older Adults.

Objectives:

  • Increase peer support and positive social ties
  • Bridge between the formal and informal support
  • Strengthen helping skills of volunteers (Community Helpers) and knowledge of mental health and aging

Target Group:

Aged 65+ who is independent in activities of daily living, feel social isolated, lack of social support such as lives alone, low income, or experiences distress during life transition such as bereavement or illness.

Be a community helper:

  • Voluntary community helpers will receive 12 hours of training on mental health, grief and loss, self-help skills, mindfulness, stress management, goal setting and healthy relationship.
  • Trained volunteers have to commit  providing 10 weeks one-to-one peer support through visit, telephone and activities. Services include emotional support, referral, help to establish goals such as better self-care and social engagement and provide knowledge on problem solving, mental health and community resources.
